Dark-eyed juncos are quite variable in appearance and are subdivided into several variants (e.g. Oregon, pink-sided, slated-colored). In general, they have black eyes, dark gray head and throat, and a white belly. Their flanks may be chestnut, pink, or gray.
Dark-eyed juncos are found in open woods and brushy areas throughout the U.S. However, some variants are localized to specific regions (e.g. Oregon in the west, pink-sided in the Rockies).
