Fox sparrows are relatively large, stocky sparrows with a spotted breast, gray or brown back, and rusty wings, rump, and tail.
Fox sparrows are uncommon to common in undergrowth in the U.S. and Canada. Four subpopulations differ in plumage and geography: Sooty (Pacific), Thick-billed (California), Slate-colored (West), and Red/Taiga (East).
