White-crowned sparrows are slender sparrows with relatively long necks and tails. As their name indicates, adults have white (and also black) stripes on the crown. During the first winter, these stripes are light and dark brown.
Several variants of white-crowned sparrows are common in brushy areas throughout the U.S., differing in bill color. The Pacific variant has a yellow bill, while the western is orange-pink and the eastern is pink.
