American goldfinches are the largest goldfinch. They are yellow and have dark wings with white wingbars. There is a gradation in plumage brightness from breeding males (brightest) to breeding females to nonbreeding females (drabbest). Breeding males also have a black cap.
American goldfinches are common in fields and woodlands throughout the U.S. and southern Canada.
