California quail are small ground-dwelling, plumed birds that are similar in appearance to Gambel's quail, but are distinguished by a scaly nape and belly. Adult males also have a light forehead and a dark crown.
California quail are common in brushy habitats along the Western coast of the U.S. and Baja Mexico. Note that the ranges of California and Gambel's quail have very little overlap.
