Gambel's quail are small ground-dwelling, plumed birds that are similar in appearance to California quail, but are distingushed by a smooth nape and pale belly. Adult males also have a dark forehead, chestnut crown, and a dark patch below the belly.
Gambel's quail are common in open areas such as thickets and deserts in the southwestern U.S. Note that the ranges of Gambel's and California quail have very little overlap.
