Sharp-tailed grouse are relatively short, stocky game birds with white-spotted wings and pale underparts. As their name indicates, they have a distinctive sharply pointed tail. During courtship display, adult males inflate purple neck sacs and flutter their wings close to the ground.
Sharp-tailed grouse are fairly common on grasslands in central Canada and Alaska. They are also found in similar habitats in northern central areas of the U.S. but are less common.
