This bird is very similar in appearance to the Western grebe and was once considered the same species. The best distinguishing characteristic is bill color: bright yellow-orange in Clark's grebe and dull yellow-green in Western grebe.
Clark's grebes also share the same geographical range and habitats as Western grebes, but tend to be more predominant in the western part of their range.
