Clapper rails are large rails with relatively long bills and necks, short tails, and short round wings. They have white-barred flanks and brown feathers with gray edges on their back.
They are common in coastal marshes of the U.S. but are often secretive. Three geographic subspecies exist (California, Gulf Coast, and Atlantic) which differ in the intensity of orange on their cheeks and breast.
