The black skimmer is a unique bird with long wings, red legs, and a red and black bill. It is the only bird with a lower mandible that is longer than its upper mandible. As its name suggests, it uses the heavy lower manible to skim the surface of the water for fish near the water surface.
When flying in a flock, black skimmers make simultaneous turns in unison. They are mainly found in coastal areas of the southern U.S. and Mexico.
