The California gull is a white-headed gull. Its adult appearance is similar to a ring-billed gull, except that it has a dark iris. During breeding, there is also a red mark near the tip of the bill.
The California gull does indeed winter on the coast of California, but it also lives in inland areas of the Western U.S.
