The elegant tern is a small crested tern with long, pointed wings and a forked tail. The adult is best distinguished by its long, thin, and slightly downcurved bill that pales from red to orange at the tip whereas the juvenile's bill is more uniformly yellowish.
Elegant terns fish Kamikaze-style, known as "plunge-diving." They are mainly localized to Baja California, although their post-breeding dispersal range extends up the Western U.S. coast.
