Forster's tern is a medium sized tern with silver primaries on the wings and a long forked tail. Nonbreeding adults have a distinctive black eye patch and a dark bill. During breeding, there is a black cap and the bill changes to orange with a black tip.
Forster's terns are found in sheltered water habitats such as marshes, ponds, and bays.
