As its name suggests, the least tern is the smallest tern. It has relatively long, narrow wings, a short forked tail, white and gray plumage, and a dark eye patch and nape. Breeding adults have a black cap, white forehead, and a yellow bill.
Least terns are common on beaches along the eastern and Gulf coasts of the U.S., but are declining along the southern California coast and inland on the Mississippi River.
