Red-winged Blackbird

Red-winged blackbirds are relatively stocky, with round wings and a short tail. Their name describes the adult male which has a black body and red lesser coverts.

There are two variants of red-winged blackbirds, typical and bicolored. Typical red-winged blackbirds also have light yellow median coverts, while bicolored lack them.

Red-winged blackbirds are abundant in fields and marshes throughout most of the U.S.
