Yellow-headed blackbirds have a dark body and yellow breast, broad wings and a short tail. Their name describes the adult male, which also has a bright yellow throat and breast, and white primary coverts. In contrast, the adult female has a brown body, pale yellow throat and breast, and lacks the white wing patch.
Yellow-headed blackbirds are locally common in reedy freshwater marshes in the western U.S.
