Common Loon

Common loons are relatively large goose-like birds with a dark bill, head, and back contrasting white undersides. Breeding adults also have a white checkered pattern on their back.

Common loons are fairly common along the Pacific and Gulf coasts of the U.S. during the winter, and near lakes in Alaska and Canada while breeding.
