Common Moorhen

Common moorhens are duck-like marsh birds. They have dark plumage with a white flank stripe and a reddish bill with a yellow tip that becomes brighter during breeding.

They are usually solitary, and are common in freshwater marshes, ponds, and slow rivers in the southern U.S.
