Short-eared owls are medium sized owls. They have pale eyes surrounded by dark eye patches and dark backs with buffy spots on the scapulars of their wings. As their name suggests, their ear tufts are relatively short and barely visible.
Short-eared owls often hunt during the day. They are found in open areas of diverse habitats, from marshes and fields to tundra.
