Brown boobies are diving seabirds with a brown back contrasted by a white belly, relatively short wings and a long tail. Two subpopulations, Atlantic and Pacific, differ in having either a dark or light head, respectively.
Brown boobies are usually found on small islands or far offshore in warm waters near Baja Mexico, southern Florida, and the Caribbean.
