The northern harrier is a slender raptor with long wings and tail. It has an owl-like facial disk and a prominent white rump when viewed from above in flight. The adult male is gray above and white below, whereas the adult female is brown above and has barred secondaries underneath the wings.
Northern harriers are common in fields and wetlands throughout the U.S.
