The rough-legged hawk is a relatively large raptor with a small bill and long wings. Its name describes its legs which are covered with feathers.
Rough-legged hawks have two morphs, light and dark. The dark variant is predominant in open areas of the eastern U.S. while the light variant is slightly more common in the west.
