Red-shouldered hawks are small buteos with a relatively long, banded tail and short wings having a characteristic pale crescent along the wingtips. All ages have orange-red shoulders, as their name indicates, and adults show orangish breasts as well.
Red-shouldered hawks are often found in woodlands near water. There are three geographic variants (California, Eastern, and Florida) which can be differentiated by the intensity of orange and presence/absence of bars or streaks on the breast.
