The red-tailed hawk is the most common hawk. As its name suggests, the adult has a distinctive red tail. Juveniles do not, but have pale primaries and dark leading edges on their wings.
Its habitat varies from woods to plains and desert, and its year-round range covers all but the most northern parts of the continental U.S
