Turkey vultures are dark-bodied raptors with a small, bare head, a hooked bill, and long wings and tail. Adults have a red head and a white-tipped bill while juveniles are drab. They often soar with their wings held in a characteristic shallow "V"-shape, called a "dihedral."
Turkey vultures have a highly sensitive sense of smell which they use to find carrion.
They are common in open fields and woodlands throughout the U.S.
