Black-necked stilts are very tall and slender shorebirds. As their name suggests, their red legs are so long that they appear to be walking on stilts. At close range, adult females can be distinguished from males by their brown and black backs, respectively.
They are found in wet habitats such as shallow marshes and ponds near the southern coast of the U.S. as well as in some parts of the western U.S.
