Killdeer

Killdeer are small upland birds with slender wings, long tails, and two distinctive black bands on a white breast. Their name comes from the sound of their call: kill-dee.

Despite their classification with shorebirds, killdeer prefer dry, open areas. They are widespread in fields and farmlands throughout the U.S.
