Phainopepla

Phainopepla (pronounced fen-oh-pep-lah) are slender, crested birds with a short bill, long square tail, and red eyes. Adult males are solid black, while females are gray with white edges on their wing feathers.

Phainopeplas are found in mesquite brushlands in the southwestern U.S. as well as Baja and central Mexico.
