European starlings are small, dark birds with a straight bill and short, square tail. During breeding, adults have a glossy black plumage with iridescent green and purple streaks and a yellow bill. Nonbreeding adults have white speckles and a black bill.
European starlings were introduced into the U.S. from Europe in the late 1800s and have since become abundant throughout the U.S. and Canada.
