The reddish egret is a relatively large and slender egret with a distinctive shaggy mane.
There are two variants or "morphs," dark and white. The dark morph is more abundant and has a reddish head and neck, whereas the white morph has completely white plumage.
Reddish egrets are found in shallow saltwater habitats along the coasts of Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico in the U.S. It is also a rare visitor to southern California.
