Greater Scaup

Greater scaup are medium-sized ducks. They are often hard to distinguish from lesser scaup. The greater scaup has a rounder head and prefers salt water in the winter, whereas the lesser form has a taller, more narrow head and prefers fresh water habitats.

As a result, the greater scaup is locally common in coastal areas.
