Snow geese are relatively stocky geese with a distinctive black "grin patch" on the bill. In flight, the undersides of the primaries (wingtips) are black. There are two body color variants (white and dark) as well as intermediate colorations.
During their winter migration, snow geese are abundant in fields and on bodies of water along their flyways through the Pacific, Rocky Mountain, and central regions of the U.S. and Canada.
