Acorn Woodpecker

Acorn woodpeckers have a clownish facial pattern that includes a red crown, white forehead and cheeks, black chin and yellow throat. Males have a larger crown than females.

Their name describes their favorite food, which they store in tree trunks for the winter.

Acorn woodpeckers are common in wooded areas near the Pacific coast and in the southwestern U.S.
