Northern Flicker

Northern flickers are relatively large woodpeckers with a brown crown, gray face, barred back and spotted belly with a black "bib."

Northern flickers are common in open wooded areas throughout the U.S. They occur in two geographical variants, "red-shafted" in the west and "yellow-shafted" in the east. These names describe the coloring underneath the wings.
