"Birding" is the activity of observing and identifying birds by their appearance, sound, or behavior. "Birdwatching" is often used synonymously, but is an inaccurate description since birds can be studied either by eye or by ear.
People who enjoy birding as a hobby are called "birders." There is a wide range of birders, ranging from casual observers who have a bird house or feeder in their yards to fanatics who crisscross the globe in pursuit of rare species. More commonly, though, a birder is a binocular-toting person who not only admires the beauty and diversity of birds but also values the conservation of wildlife and their habitats.
